Training and Demonstrations

Introduction to Working with HorsesIntroduction to Working with Horses' Courses 2024

Come and join us on our smallholding in north-east Wales for an Introduction to Working with Horses' Course. I work full time with my horses through the seasons carrying out low impact land management from horselogging to bracken control and field work. Click on the image (left) for details of four one day courses I am running in May and June 2024.

The whole Carnog team is also available for working demonstrations or training days at your site or from our bases in Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant.  We can demonstrate a full range of techniques, from single horse to pair, horselogging with the swingle tree and the timber arch and field skills such as harrowing and using the bracken roller.  We also have a variety of different harness to show.  In the woodland, in the field or on the showground, Molly and Tyler can put on a good show for you.

Horselogging and Woodland Skills Course 1st - 5th October 2019

Carnog successfully ran another week long course in practical horselogging and woodland skills, at Coed Llwynonn on Anglesey. The course was limited to 4 people, to ensure there was plenty of hands on the reins time, and it covered:

Four logging trainers* horse care, selection of work horse, harness and equipment
* snigging with a single horse and a pair
* using a timber arch and other wheeled equipment
* parbuckling and working with the horses to pull down hung up trees
* health and safety and professional working standards.

Each day there was also a workshop on other traditional woodland skills. Click on the image for more details about the course. We hope to run the course again soon.

Working with Horses Courses at Glanaber and Sunnyside Farms

Training with BillyWe have been running 'Introduction to Working with Horses' Courses at our home base of Glanaber Farm in Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant in Powys and at Sunnyside Farm, Parracombe, Devon. These one day introductions are open to a maximum of 4 people and so will give you lots of hands-on experience with our working cobs, Tyler, Molly and Bluebell.  They are very steady and generous and safe for novices to learn a few basic techniques and have already done a number of courses.

We can tailor our course for you but usually during the course we will cover basic care for your horse, choosing a working horse, looking at a variety of harness and equipment as standard.  Most of the time will be given over to hands-on the reins time and giving you a real practical experience day to remember.

Introduction to Horse Logging Courses at CAT

We have also carried out successful 'Introduction to Horse Logging' courses at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) near Machynlleth in March 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022. The courses give a practical introduction to working with horses in low-impact woodland and land management.

We have also carried out a number of demonstrations on CAT's range of woodland courses and in the CAT Visitor Centre.  Basic training days have been carried out for privately arranged small groups and individuals.  Contact us to discuss your requirements.
